I just read an article at Cian O'Connor's web site about his horse, Waterford Crystal, flunking the olympic drug test. As you may recall, they won the gold in the equestrian show jumping event.

Both Cian and his vet said that the horse was given a sedative over a month before so they could treat an injured leg with hydrobaths, which require the horse to be still for some time. Waterford Crystal was in peak form, so the sedative was necessary. It's one that is out of the body in about 14 days.

Now there's talk of taking away his gold, if it hasn't already happened.

Both Cian and the vet hinted that perhaps someone slipped the horse something, and both deny giving him anything.

I want to believe them...at least to think that they're not so stupid as to drug the horse when such stringent testing will take place. Not to mention the fact that it's a lowlife thing to do in the first place, except for medical reasons.

PS: I almost put this in the sports section, but I think there's an ethical discussion to be had here.
