rte reports Cork project 'could be as big as IFSC'

The Government has set up a team to work on plans for the development of Haulbowline Island on the lower Cork harbour.

Enterprise, Trade & Employment Minister Micheál Martin said the project would be one of the largest in the State since the development of Dublin's financial services centre. The interdepartmental team will be led by his department.

The Minister said the 44-acre site had the potential to be 'the most attractive waterside site in Europe'. The island is currently home to the National Maritime College and the UCC Marine Research Centre. It also contains the site of the former Irish Steel plant.

Among the facilities being considered for the site are 16,000 square metres of office space, around 200 apartments, a marina, a hotel and what is being described as 'a landmark building which would become a renowned feature for Cork as a whole'.
