It is being reported that the Irish taxpayer is to pay Irish Ferries over €4 million towards the cost of making over 500 Irish seafarers redundant last year before replacing them with lower paid workers from Eastern Europe.

The Irish taxpayer will fund this amount under the statutory redundancy rebate scheme, which allows employers to reclaim a portion of their redundancy payments to workers. In its most recent accounts, Irish Ferries stated that the redundancy package cost the group €29.1m net of the exchequer rebate, which it estimated at €4.1m plus additional costs.

Jack O'Connor The President of SIPTU said that he was disgusted but not surprised by the decision.
