The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern is in the Middle East visit, leading one of the largest trade missions ever, involving 114 companies. Bertie Ahern will be busy on this five day official visit to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. This visit to Saudi Arabia is the first by a serving Taoiseach.
He is reported as spending today and tomorrow in Riyadh, where he was the guest of honour last night at a dinner hosted by Crown Prince Sultan. This morning he is scheduled to make a courtesy call on Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz, governor of Riyadh, before visiting the national museum and local businesses. During the Irish business tour of the middle east Mr Ahern will is also to formally open the offices of Vilicom, a Dublin-based tele communications company, the first wholly-owned Irish firm to operate in Saudi Arabia. This evening he will attend a reception for the Irish community. He will spend Wednesday and Thursday in Abu Dhabi.
There are many Arab interests in Ireland, most notably in the equine world, but this is the first such large scale official Irish business venture to be present in the middle east region.
