Irish Travellers caravan dream comes true

Paddy and Bridget Doherty are Irish travellers aged in their 70s and in poor health, they had been living in a caravan at a Clondalkin halting site in Dublin. Their caravan was not suitable being cold and damp and without the plumbing for toilet and washing.
Mr And Mrs Doherty like any other Irish couple in a similar situation, had asked the South Dublin County Council to help make their life more comfortable. They asked by main comparison, a reasonable request, all they wanted to be provided with was a centrally-heated and plumbed caravan. However the local Dublin authority refused that and offered instead settled accommodation of an apartment.
Being of the traveller culture this was not acceptable, so they took their case to Irish courts, saying they were not being treated equally. The Doherty's lost their initial High Court case, because they were offered the apartment accommodation.
The couple appealed to the Supreme Court and today the case was settled, the Irish travellers will receive an undisclosed sum which they can use to invest in a new caravan of their dreams.
