Rory Best is cleared to start Wales match.
Best to start against Wales
Rory Best - Fit to start Ireland's first quarter-final in eight years, Saturday 6.00am (09:21) Ireland hooker Rory Best will start against Wales in Saturday's RWC quarter-final after a further assessment in Wellington on Thursday

Best, O'Gara and Murray named in Ireland XV
Rory Best has been named in Ireland team to face Wales in Saturday's RWC 2011 quarter-final clash with Wales, while Ronan O'Gara and Conor Murray are to continue in the half-back positions.
Rory Best has been named in Ireland team to face Wales in Saturday's RWC 2011 quarter-final clash with Wales, while Ronan O'Gara and Conor Murray are to continue in the half-back positions.

Hooker Best was forced off by a shoulder injury after 50-minutes during Ireland's 36-6 Pool C victory over Italy last Sunday. He has been picked on a 'wait and see' basis after his injury has responded well to treatment this week.

Should Best fail to recover full fitness in time for the match, Sean Cronin will take his place in the starting XV with Damian Varley stepping up to the bench.

The rest of the team is also unchanged.
Cian Healy is named at loosehead with Mike Ross at tighthead. Paul O'Connell and Donncha O'Callaghan in the second row with O'Callaghan set to win his 80th Ireland cap. Stephen Ferris , Sean O'Brien and Jamie Heaslip will start in the back-row.

Cronin, Tom Court, Donnacha Ryan and Denis Leamy are the substitute forwards.

Head coach Declan Kidney has also resisted the urge to make changes in his backline, opting to stick with Ronan O'Gara and Conor Murray at out-half and scrum-half respectively.

Jonathan Sexton and Eoin Reddan are again named on the bench, along with Andrew Trimble.

Tommy Bowe continues on the right wing with Keith Earls on the left and Rob Kearney at full-back. Gordon D'Arcy and Brian O'Driscoll will start in the centres with O'Driscoll set to win his 117th cap.

Ireland team to play Wales in the RWC 2011 quarter-final at Westpac Stadium, Saturday 8 October, 6am (Irish time):

15. Rob Kearney 14. Tommy Bowe 13. Brian O'Driscoll 12. Gordon D'Arcy 11. Keith Earls 10. Ronan O'Gara 9. Conor Murray 1. Cian Healy 2. Rory Best 3. Mike Ross 4. Donncha O'Callaghan 5. Paul O'Connell 6. Stephen Ferris 7. Sean O'Brien 8. Jamie Heaslip

16. Sean Cronin 17. Tom Court 18. Donnacha Ryan 19. Denis Leamy 20. Eoin Reddan 21. Jonathan Sexton. 22. Andrew Trimble

Ireland hooker Rory Best has responded well to treatment on his shoulder but remains doubtful to face Wales in Saturday's World Cup quarter-final.
Best has been in rehabilitation since spraining his AC joint during Sunday's 36-6 victory over Italy at Otago Stadium.
Ireland are giving the Ulster front row, who has been in outstanding form, every chance to prove his fitness and have yet to rule him out of the World Cup.
"The medical team's worked hard with Rory over the last 24 hours. He's reacted well and we're very pleased with the response," said assistant coach Mark Tainton.
"He's not totally ruled out but his chances at the moment are long.
"He's doubtful for this weekend but has not been ruled out of the competition."
With Ireland due to name their side to face Wales in the early hours of tomorrow, time is running out.
If he fails to recover, Sean Cronin will start with Damien Varley promoted to the bench.
Munster hooker Michael Sherry has been summoned to New Zealand as precautionary cover for Best, who remains an official member of the World Cup squad.

Rory Best appears to be a major doubt for Ireland's World Cup quarter-final against Wales after he sustained a shoulder injury in the win over Italy.
Best sprained the AC join in his right shoulder during yesterday's 36-6 victory over Italy at Otago Stadium and is receiving treatment.
A replacement for the Ulster hooker, who has been playing the best rugby of his Ireland career, has yet to be summoned and a clearer picture over his condition will emerge tomorrow.
Damien Varley has already been called into the Squad as a replacement for Jerry Flannery.

80 mins TRY! Ireland 36-6 Italy (Try Earls, Con Sexton)
And Ireland get another try! Rob Kearney runs back the dropout and off the ruck, Andrew Trimble gets through a gap. He then delayed for a second before passing to birthday boy Keith Earls who raced over for the try in the corner.

And all is good with Ireland as Jonny Sexton nails the touchline conversion.

Superb second half for Ireland.
Ireland now play wales in the quarter finals.

Ronan O'Gara and Conor Murray have been handed the starting half-back jerseys for Ireland's crucial Rugby World Cup Pool C showdown with Italy on Sunday.

There was widespread speculation that head coach Declan Kidney would make the switch after the pair trained extensively with the first team this week. He confirmed that they would start at this afternoon's press conference in New Zealand.

O'Gara played at out-half in Ireland's most recent game against Russia at out-half, steering a largely second string side to a convincing win.

But he effectively replaces Jonathan Sexton, who started Ireland's superb win over Australia and the opening win against USA. Sexton has been struggling to land kicks at goal since the beginning of the tournament while O'Gara has the second best kicking success rate in the tournament behind South Africa's Morne Steyn.

Kidney is adamant that O'Gara has not been picked for his place kicking, citing his performance alongside Murray in the tense last quarter of the Australia game as the key factor in his decision.

He said: "Ronan and Conor went well in the last 20 minutes against Australia. Ronan went well against Russia as well. This is the right combination for us against Italy. They've played a few times together now.

"Ronan has been place kicking well, but if Jonathan Sexton was starting on Sunday it wouldn't worry me. I'd hate to go down the road that we're picking Ronan because of his place kicking.

"He's too good a player to be saying that about him while Jonny's place kicking is not of concern to me."

Eoin Reddan, who partnered Sexton for the Australia game, also misses out. He and Sexton are picked on the bench.

Aside from the half-backs, Kidney has also opted to stick with the team that faced Australia. That means Keith Earls retaining his place on the left wing despite a strong challenge from Andrew Trimble, who impressed against Russia and during Ireland's warmup series. The Ulsterman is the third back on the bench.

Tommy Bowe, recovered from a minor calf problem, is on the other wing with Rob Kearney at full-back. As usual, Brian O'Driscoll is at outside centre with Gordon D'Arcy inside him in the number 12 jersey.

Kidney has also re-selected the entire pack that started the Australia game with Paul O'Connell overcoming a hamstring problem that prevented him from training fully during the week to take his place in the second row. Donncha O'Callaghan is the other second row.

Cian Healy, Rory Best and Mike Ross will start in a front row that Italy have signalled they will challenge at every scrum opportunity with Stephen Ferris, Sean O'Brien and Jamie Heaslip continuing at blindside, openside and number eight respectively.

Sean Cronin and Tom Court are the reserve front rowers with Munster duo Donnacha Ryan and Denis Leamy providing cover for the rest of the forwards.

The winner of the clash is virtually certain to progress from the pool and in Ireland's case, victory will most likely mean a quarter-final clash with Six Nations rivals Wales, who play Fiji on Sunday.

But Ireland are likely to end up missing out on a quarter-final place if they fail to beat Italy and could yet rue the failure to secure a bonus point in the opening match against USA.

Kidney has repeatedly insisted that Italy has always been seen as the key match inside the camp.

"Everyone was talking about the Australia game coming into the World Cup, but in our minds we always knew Italy was the big one.

"Australia was the attractive one to win, Italy was the necessary one to win. The law of averages said Australia would beat Italy in the first match.

"Unless you do a New Zealand and get 15 points from your first three games, it was always going to come down to this. England and South Africa find themselves in the same situation - three wins from three - yet are also in cup final situations.

"If we were to go out at this stage, well that's life. The Australia win gave us momentum and that was carried on against Russia."

IRELAND team to play Italy in RWC Pool C at Otago Stadium on Sunday, 2 October at 8.30am (Irish time):

15 Rob Kearney, 14 Tommy Bowe, 13 Brian O'Driscoll, 12 Gordon D'Arcy, 11 Keith Earls, 10 Ronan O'Gara, 9 Conor Murray, 1 Cian Healy, 2 Rory Best, 3 Mike Ross, 4 Donncha O'Callaghan, 5 Paul O'Connell, 6 Stephen Ferris, 7 Sean O'Brien, 8 Jamie Heaslip

Replacements: 16 Sean Cronin, 17 Tom Court, 18 Donnacha Ryan, 19 Denis Leamy, 20 Eoin Reddan, 21 Jonathan Sexton, 22 Andrew Trimble

Kidney rings the changes for Russia clash
Leo Cullen - Will captain Ireland against Russia on Sunday
Ireland coach Declan Kidney has rung the changes for his side's Rugby World Cup Pool C clash against Russia on Sunday.
The team shows ten changes - one a positional switch - from the one that secured a sensational 15-6 win over Australia last weekend.
Leo Cullen comes into the team in place of Paul O'Connell and will also have the honour of captaining the team in his first Rugby World Cup appearance.
Fergus McFadden also makes his first appearance in a Rugby World Cup and starts on the right wing.
Keith Earls moves from the wing to outside centre alongside Paddy Wallace, who also makes his debut in the tournament.
Andrew Trimble is named on the left wing, while Ronan O'Gara and Isaac Boss start as the half-back partnership.
Sean Cronin makes the switch with Rory Best from the replacements to start at hooker, with Tony Buckley also making his first start at tight-head prop.
Donnacha Ryan starts at blind side in place of Stephen Ferris.
"There was a need to freshen it up because we had a big Test match against Australia last Saturday," said Declan Kidney.
"The lads coming in will bring freshness and enthusiasm. The good thing about touring and tournaments is that the guys in the squad already know the calls.
"This is the players' World Cup and they'll only buy into that if they get a chance to show themselves."
Kidney has opted not to give Shane Jennings a run-out, insisting that Sean O'Brien needs game-time at openside.
"Sean just needs more time at seven. Shane can do a good job for us at seven but Sean needs to play because the more time you have there the better you get in the position.
"If he plays like he did against Australia I'll be happy."

Ireland - Are now well placed to go far in this World Cup
Scans have confirmed that Gordon D'Arcy and Paul O'Connell both picked up hamstring strains following the victory over Australia on Saturday.

Flannery ruled out of the Rugby World Cup
Jerry Flannery's Rugby World Cup is over
Jerry Flannery has been ruled out of the remainder of the Rugby World Cup because of a calf injury, with Damien Varley called up to the squad.
Flannery suffered a tear of his left calf during training yesterday morning in Auckland.
Ireland flanker David Wallace has been ruled out of the World Cup after sustaining a knee injury in today's 20-9 defeat by England at Aviva Stadium.
The IRFU have announced that Shane Jennings will replace David Wallace in the World Cup squad after the Munster flanker suffered a "serious knee ligament injury" in Saturday's defeat to England.
35-year-old Wallace will require surgery to repair the damage suffered after being tackled by England centre Manu Tuilagi.
The IRFU have also confirmed that prop Cian Healy will not fly out to New Zealand with the rest of the squad after suffering damage to his eye socket during the game.
The Leinster player will recover in Ireland for four extra days, on medical advice, and then join up with the squad.
The injury puts Healy's participation in the first pool game, against the USA on 11 September, in doubt.

Ireland meet for pre-season training camp
The Ireland squad converged in Kildare this evening for the first of the three planned pre-season camps as part of preparations for the Rugby World Cup in September.
Ireland head coach Declan Kidney recently announced a 43-man panel that would take part in this first camp, which included four uncapped players in Conor Murray, Felix Jones, Brett Wilkinson and Mike McCarthy.
While the majority of players have already begun some level of pre-season training, depending on when they finished playing, there are several players from that original 43-man squad who will not be attending due to injury or ongoing rehabilitation.

Brett Wilkinson has pulled a hamstring and will remain in his provincial centre in Connacht to begin rehabilitation on the injury.
Stephen Ferris has returned to full running following his long-term knee injury, but has remained with Ulster to continue his rehabilitation programme.
Gordon D'Arcy injured his right ankle during the Heineken Cup final, and having not responded to treatment, underwent surgery last week.
It is expected that he will return to full training at the start of August and should be available for selection for the home Guinness Summer Series games against France and England.

Shane Horgan's faint hopes of forcing his way into Ireland's World Cup squad are finished after he was ruled out of the entire build-up to the tournament.
Northampton's James Downey, who reached the Heineken Cup final playing in the centre for the Saints, was also not included.
However, Leinster's Shane Jennings and Tony Buckley, now of Sale, remain in the mix.

The IRFU statement continued: 'The squad includes several players who are in the process of returning from long-term injuries to begin their pre-season after lengthy layoffs.

'Some short-term injury concerns were Shane Jennings, who broke an arm at the end of the season, and Tony Buckley, who had a procedure on a shoulder injury.

'It is expected that both will have healed sufficiently so as not to restrict the beginning of their conditioning programmes.'

Felix Jones, Mike McCarthy, Conor Murray and Brett Wilkinson are the only uncapped players among the 43 to be involved in the three training camps staged in June and July.

'This is the first step in preparation for the World Cup and the group called into our first camp shows that there is competition for places right across the board,' said Kidney.

'There are players who we have identified as part of the larger World Cup squad who will not be in the first camp and will be based with their provincial and club fitness staff.

'But that may change as we go through June and July, so none of that larger group are necessarily out of contention for the final squad.

'The aim three years ago was to deepen the strength of the squad and there are a number of players that have come through in that time, either playing with their provinces or with the Wolfhounds and the Ireland team.

'There are big challenges ahead for the group with the coming pre-season and then five games in August.'

World cup Ireland August update
Declan Kidney insists Ireland are approaching tomorrow's World Cup warm-up game against Scotland as if it were a full-on Test match.

Ireland have work to do, with players returning to fitness, while the side selected isn't full-strength.

Rob Kearney, Tomas O'Leary and Jerry Flannery are returning from lengthy injury lay-offs and will be watched closely.

While Kidney is juggling the need to test out combinations and give certain players crucial game time, he insists beating Scotland remains the priority.

"When you play a Test match there's no holding back. You either go for it or you don't," he said.

"If you operate at only 80 or 90% you actually increase your chances of picking up a knock.

"It's a Test match and that's the way we're approaching it - we want to go out there and get a win.

"First and foremost every time you wear the green jersey you want to win the game.

"That's why we have a good, experienced team with just one new cap in it.

"We also want to try new combinations and from there get our base level right to see where we are come Saturday."

Kearney has not played since last year's autumn Test against New Zealand when he sustained a knee injury.

"Rob will be judged by a certain standard and there will be comments that he hasn't played for a while," said Kidney.

"All we ask is that he gives everything. He'll work through it and whether he has a storming or game or a not so good one, it's just one game.

"When you're out injured for a long time, you just want to be able to get back on the pitch.

"If you can do that in a Test it's a bit daunting, but also an added bonus."

O'Leary made his last Ireland appearance against France in February before also being ruled out for the remainder of the season with an eye problem.

Flannery's long battle with a calf injury that forced him to miss the autumn and RBS 6 Nations looks over after the Munster hooker was named on the bench.

All Blacks 30-14 Australia
Owen Franks of the All Blacks makes a break during the Eden Park encounter (11:26) New Zealand left no one in doubt they will be one of the favourites for the rugby World Cup after a clinical 30-14 victory over Australia in their Tri-Nations clash at Eden Park on Saturday.
