Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     Celtic FC legends V Man Utd Legends Charity match

Match Result
Celtic FC legends 5 Man Utd Legends 2

Henrik Larsson scores a hat trick. Bobby Petta scores 2.
Celtic Legends fought back from 2-0 down to win 5-2.
Darren Campbell scored a tap in for Man Utd, put through by Dwight Yorke who also scored the opener for Man Utd. Yorke showed he still has speed and can play football.
But it was no surprise to Celtic Fans that Henrik Larsson looked the exceptional player even among legends. Even now at 39 years old, Henrik can still play at a high level, he is simply a different class. Larsson's third goal was typical of Larsson in his prime, receiving a pass into the box, he spins to make a shooting angle and in the same movement hits the ball into a corner, unstoppable. Henrik still appears to have so much time, the mark of a great striker he makes it look simple.
Most enjoyable match for Celtic fans for a long time The cause and the joy of everyone involved was a credit to sport.
Hopefully the current squad were all watching and were reminded just how fortunate they are, and what a honor it is to play for a giant football club called Celtic.
Credit to that other Giant of football, Manchester United, the club is a legend and one most Celtic fans respect.

Reported Attendance 57,000
All proceeds to the Oxfam East African Appeal

The Luckiest people on the night
Kelly, Falconer, Craig
Three very lucky Celtic fans who won auctions for a place in the Celtic side. All three came on as substitutes in the second half. It was a joy to watch all three celebrate goals with the Celtic legends.

I hope John Kennedy gets some other benefit, this match on 9 August, was originally planned, as part of a testimonial match for the former Celtic player and Scotand international whose career was cut short by injury. John Kennedy has said his conscience would not allow him to pocket the cash when so many millions were currently dying in East Africa. The proceeds will now be donated in full to the Oxfam relief fund.
Kennedy said: "I'm fortunate enough to have had my career and earned decent money out of it. I lost my career, but there's people losing lives just through a lack of water and food."
Kennedy said: "It's heartbreaking. And if I can make some sort of impact with the game and the exposure it might bring, then it might open up people's eyes here."
Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Roy Keane, Dwight Yorke, and Teddy Sheringham are confirmed to play in the game, which will be shown on ITV4.

Oxfam's East Africa famine appeal has been announced as the main beneficiary of The Legends Celtic vs Manchester United charity match on August 9.
The drought in this area has already caused devastation and was officially declared a famine in two regions of Somalia by the United Nations on Wednesday 20th July 2011.
The Celtic Charity Fund has taken the decision to make Oxfam’s East Africa Famine Appeal the event’s main charitable beneficiary. With ITV broadcasting the match live from Celtic Park, stars from football and entertainment will be out in force at Celtic Park to back the campaign.
Judith Robertson, Head of Oxfam Scotland, said: "East Africa is facing the worst food crisis seen anywhere in the world for many years – almost 12 million people are at risk right now. Oxfam is there, and we’re already making a huge difference, but we need fans of Celtic, Manchester United and football fans across the world to rally together and help us to do even more.

“The Legends Celtic vs. Manchester United match is going to be an incredible night, and it’s fantastic to see so many players – past and present – and famous fans getting involved. Thanks to them, and the support of the fans, every minute of the match will help us raise money to save lives across Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.”
Legends of both clubs and the entertainment world will be taking part in the match. Already confirmed are players such as Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Dwight Yorke, Gordon Strachan, Patrick Kielty, Richard Ashcroft, Ricky Hatton, Nigel Benn, Angus Deayton, Ricky Whittle and Nicky Byrne. Billy Connolly, the Patron of the Celtic Foundation, will be at Celtic Park on the night, and a host of other confirmed as lending support to the event and the fundraising effort are Wayne Rooney, Rod Stewart, Eddie Jordan, Sharleen Spiteri, Dougray Scott and Paolo Nutini.

The line up has swelled further this week with the addition of Manchester United hero Roy Keane. For Keane – who made 326 appearances for Man U scoring 33 goals – the return to Celtic Park will bring back memories of his final season as a player. He returns to Celtic on the eve of his 40th birthday and will surely be looking for a victory to put the icing on his celebrations. The former Ireland international played 10 times for Celtic FC in the 2005/2006 season before retiring on medical grounds.
Truly deserving of his place in The Legends, Alex Ferguson has said of Keane: “Over the years when they start picking the best teams of all time, he will be in there.”
Exec producer Lester Holcombe said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured Roy to play. For many of the fans he’s the greatest midfielder that Man U ever had. He never took any prisoners and we’re fully expecting him to bring that same competitive edge to this game.”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon said: "This is a great cause and one we should all support. The charitable spirit and generosity of our supporters is well known and we’re sure our fans will once again lend their backing to support the many thousands of people in Africa who need our help.
“The images from Africa which we are seeing daily are heart-breaking and this is a cause everyone at the Club is fully behind. It’s fantastic that so many people are committing their time and support to this event. We’re sure the evening will be a great success and we look forward to welcoming as many supporters as possible.
Peter Lawwell, chief executive of the club, said: “We will be hoping to do all we can to raise as much as possible for this cause. We thank everyone involved taking part and all our fans for their support as we aim to make a difference.”

The match is the 9th game produced by the Legends for live broadcast in the UK and internationally. These matches have raised hundreds of thousands for charity and are watched by millions of people worldwide.

Peter Lawwell: We can make a difference

By: Newsroom Staff on 29 Jul, 2011 12:08

CELTIC’S history has always been an integral part of the club’s identity. Formed in the late 1800s to help alleviate poverty in the East End of Glasgow, many of those who formed the club and supported it in those early days had fled to the city to escape the Great Famine in Ireland.

It is fitting, therefore, that Celtic and its supporters should be raising money now, in 2011, to help the victims of the famine that has struck in East Africa.

The forthcoming Legends match at Celtic Park on Tuesday, August 9 between Celtic and Manchester United will raise money for Oxfam’s Famine Appeal.

And while that is obviously the main focus of the event, supporters will also relish the prospect of once again cheering the likes of Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Lubo Moravcik, John Hartson, Pierre van Hooijdonk and many, many more in the Hoops once again.

Speaking at the official launch, Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “It’s something we’re proud to be a part of. Celtic is more than a football club and I’m proud of that fact. We’re proud to be associated with this event and hopefully we can make a difference.

“We’re seeing the pictures coming in every night of dire circumstances brought on by the drought. I don’t think anybody could not be moved by those scenes, so Celtic have decided to have this game and pick Oxfam for the topical nature and the urgency that’s needed over there.

“Celtic was formed in 1888 to play football matches and raise money to feed the poor of the East End of Glasgow. Many of those were Irish immigrants who fled the famine in Ireland and I feel it’s really appropriate that Celtic, in 2011, play football matches and raise money for those blighted by famine.”

The Celtic Chief Executive also singled out John Kennedy for special praise after the former Celt announced that he is donating the portion of gate receipts from the game that he was due to receive to the Oxfam Appeal.

“As part of John’s benefit year he was previously going to receive some of the gate receipts,” said Peter Lawwell, “but he has decided to donate his portion to the cause, which is a fantastic gesture and gives you a measure of John Kennedy.

“Running alongside the event that night, the game will be live on TV. It will be a three-hour programme on ITV4. There will be host of celebrities taking apart in the TV programme and around that there will be many ways for people to donate.

“I’m sure the Celtic supporters will come out and support this in their numbers. For those who can’t make it, there will be ways of donating through TV.

“And it’s not necessarily Celtic supporters, I think supporters of football, as well as Man United, and those who just want to help the cause will come along.”

Update on match news
Hollywood actor Gerard Butler is to play for Celtic in a charity match against Manchester United to help raise money to tackle famine in east Africa, the Glasgow club has announced.
The lifelong Celtic fan will pull on the famous hooped jersey for the first time in the "legends" charity match, which will see a host of former players and celebrity fans from both sides battle it out at Parkhead on Tuesday.
A club spokesperson said The Bounty Hunter star is "delighted at getting the opportunity to play at Celtic Park".
The 41-year-old Paisley-born actor, who rose to fame in action film 300, will be joined in the Parkhead side by Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton and manager Neil Lennon.
Former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton, boxer Steve Collins and The View band members Pete Reilly and Kyle Falconer will also be in the line-up.

Meanwhile, former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan will pull on his former jersey to suit up for Manchester United.
He will be joined by Teddy Sheringham, Dwight Yorke and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to raise money for the crisis.
Other celebrities playing for the visitors include singers Richard Ashcroft, Tinchy Stryder and Simon Webbe and former Have I Got News For You host Angus Deayton.

Celebrities including Billy Connolly will also be at Parkhead with collection buckets, encouraging Hoops and United supporters to help ease the suffering in the Horn of Africa.
A share of the proceeds will benefit former Celtic defender John Kennedy, whose career was cut short by an injury sustained during a Scotland international match against Romania at Hampden Park.

Celtic manager Lennon said he was "very excited" about the match.
He said: "Manchester United have had some great teams over the years, and a lot of the players will be turning up for that.
"The history of our club was that it was started as a charitable organisation for Irish immigrants in Glasgow and we have carried that through year after year on donating to charity ever since.
"We just hope on the night it's a great occasion and we get a lot of people through the turnstiles."
The match kicks off at 7.45pm on Tuesday.
