Irish Business News Discussion:     IAWS Co-op has a WEEE opportunity

The IAWS Co-op is to invest in a new company set up to recycle electrical equipment.

This follows the recent introduction of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) rules on the disposal of household appliances and other electronic equipment.

IAWS Co-op is to have a controlling interest in the new company, TechRec, which has ordered a processing plant capable of recycling up to 24,000 tonnes of WEEE Laughing a year into reusable materials.

TechRec has signed a contract with Switzerland's Immark, which will supply the plant. The plant will begin operating early next year. Immark has been providing the recycling service in Switzerland for 15 years.

'The plant will be a significant benefit to Irish producers and distributors of electrical and electronic equipment and the local authorities, all of whom are under considerable pressure to create proper recycling channels for this specialised waste stream,' said IAWS.

TechRec's other shareholders include its management team - managing director Gerry Killen and operations director Brendan Palmer - and Immark.

IAWS Co-op chief executive Philip Lynch said TechRec was investing €5m in the new facility. The IAWS Co-op recently announced plans to change its name to One51 ahead of a possible flotation.
