Iowa Irish

Location: AuGres, Michigan

Iowa is a midwestern state in the U.S. I have never been there. It is and always has been largely rural. It has perhaps the best soil in the whole of the U.S. The history of the Irish immigrant in the U.S. is reported by many to be mostly in large cities, and a lot of it was. But, as much as the historic nature of other places such as Butte, Montana, which drew Irish to the mining areas there, what better place for persons of the earth such as the Irish to come and plant roots. And they came from all parts of Ireland to this mostly flat land. And so they did.

I will post a link to "The Irish in Iowa" which contains a vast history of Iowa Irish. The Items of General Irish Interest are many and clearly worth a look. The story of the statue of Robert Emmet in Emmetsburg (only 4 in the world) is hilarious, and many articles broaden out to other parts of the Irish coming to America. The local Iowa newspapers from 1849 era seemed to be quite bold in their articles re Ireland and report gloriously the arrest/dismay of the arrest of Meagher, O'Brien, et al.
