Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     Global Irish forums

This gathering of influential Irish from around the world ...will be interesting to watch ...it can't do any harm ....can it.

Global Irish Economic Forum starts today
Senior figures from the world of international business are gathering in Dublin today for an economic forum aimed at generating ideas for Ireland's economic recovery.
More than 180 people with links to Ireland have accepted invitations from the Taoiseach to attend the Global Irish Economic Forum at Farmleigh House.
The Government says the forum will examine how the Irish at home and abroad can work together to generate ideas which will contribute to our economic recovery.

Invitations were issued in a personal letter from the Taoiseach and more than 180 people, who are travelling at their own expense and participating for free, have agreed to attend.
They include representatives from the US, Britain, Australia, China, Argentina, Europe and the Middle East.

Among those attending will be Craig Barrett, the retired CEO and Chairman of Intel, Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas, Brendan McDonagh, CEO of HSBC North America, financier Dermot Desmond and management guru Gerry Robinson
The forums will include five separate sessions today and tomorrow.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, says it has the potential to be an extremely significant event in addressing our economic problems and developing a long term strategy to harness the potential of the global Irish community.
The forums programme also features a number of hospitality events, including a reception hosted by President Mary McAleese. A dinner at Dublin Castle will be hosted by Tanaiste Mary Coughlan tomorrow, while delegates will also be brought to the All-Ireland football final on Sunday.

Full details of the Global Irish forums
The forum aims to bring together some of the most influential business and cultural members of the global Irish community, as well as those with a strong business connection to Ireland.

It will aim to explore how the Irish, at home and abroad, and those with a strong interest in Ireland, can work together and contribute to Ireland's overall efforts at economic recovery.

Some 160 people will be in attendance, including international business leaders and cultural figures.

Micheal MartinMinister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin says he believes the Forum 'has the potential to be an extremely significant event, both as a step towards addressing our current economic challenges and as a platform for the development of a long-term strategy which will channel the enormous potential of the global community.

'The positive reaction with which invitees have greeted the initiative augurs well for its success.'

Following the meeting, the Department of Foreign Affairs will prepare an official report of the Forum which will incorporate the ideas that emerged over the course of the event.

The report will be presented to the Government for its consideration.

It is expected that a key tangible outcome of the Forum will be the establishment of a formal global Irish network, which will be serviced by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The event is being co-ordinated by the Department of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the Government.
