Gaeilge the Irish language will be an official European language on January 1 2007 .

Bulgarian and Romanian are expected to get official status on the same day as Gaeilge. When Gaeilge The Irish language gets its official language status in the EU on 1 January the total official languages across the European Union will be 23. According to Ireland's 2002 census, 1.57 million of the four million population can speak Irish.

The EU describes linguistic diversity as a key theme in the EU, noting that Catalan, Basque and Galician have been granted semi-official status.
