STEPS TO THE SEA

I take the steps to the sea in bounds
So happy am I to feel the spray
Against my face, salty tang kissing my lips
The green algae runner soft against my feet
I race down to touch the water
So it laps at my toes like a puppy

It is cold, it is June
Grey, green, blue ripples
Greet me like old friends
Chameleon colors shimmer-shine
The sun reflects off the waves
They laugh, crashing happily

Hello, hello, hello they sing

Living inland for so long
Breeds fear of the vastness
But descending the steps
I throw it off like the heavy quilt
That keeps me snug all night
But becomes too warm in the morning

Hidden by the murky Irish depths
Life teems beneath the surface
This is where it began
But not where it ends

I take the steps to the sea in bounds
Determined to submerge myself
In the ocean’s womb
Contented to become part of the plan
A single painted figure swimming between
The water-colored dimensions of heaven and earth
