Irish Poetry Writers Forum Discussion:     Ode To Our Ancestors
Oh ye our ancestors that have fought the fight
Brought us to where we are today
Meager attempts to begin and imagine the sacrifice and toil
Spent for those who were yours and yet knew us not that day

You gave with your sweat, tears and muscle and blood
While brutalized, stripped of life’s basic needs as they tried to take yer dignity
Ye didn’t run to shelter yourselves and find a place to be safe and at ease
But stayed and stood and took all the blows not knowing us your seed

Today we stand because of you
Your unselfish loyalty to family and friend
We wouldn’t be here to pen our days
If dear old Republic Of Ireland ye did not defend.

What can we do to never forget and uphold all ye have done
Keeping memory alive and yer feats unspoilt that brought for us this gain
Our attempts to live as proud as ye were and giving as much as ye gave
Fittly wearing our Irishness and not allowing any to profane the name.
