KINNITY'S KEEP

Framed against a darkening sky
Standin' guard, caught in time
My breath catches...I draw near
I am running late I fear...

All my common sense has fled
Frantic thoughts run through my head
I am a traveller, versed in song
The day is spent, my trip's been long...

The kitchen door of the keep darkened
No cook to call, nor maid to harken
Ah but for a bit of mead or meat
A spot before the fire to eat

Creeping quietly, to the fore
I peek past the massive wooden door
No banquet in progress, no ladies fair
No sign of life in the Great Hall there

'Tis said Kinnity's Castle's haunted
But a traveller brave as I's undaunted
Though there seems to be no mead or meat
Or spot before the fire to eat

I push open the heavy door
Then nudge it open a little more
Eerie shadows fill the room
I gulp and feel a sense of doom

Shall I go or shall I stay?
I shiver and feel watched...like prey
And then a figure cloaked in black
Approaches from the hall straight back...

Oh Saint Brigid...protect me please
I cannot run...fall to my knees
Cringing for the worse expected
Hold my breath and wait...

But I am neglected...

Look up and see the figure gone
While the flickering shadows flicker on
And though my heart is pounding strong
I bravely sing out with this song...

Black Monk come down from the tower
Watcher of O'Carroll's stone cold bower
Those who see ye fill with fright
When tolls the bell at the hour midnight

A sigh of relief...I finally breathe
Back away and turn to leave
Would rather sleep in storm or rain
Then chance to see the Monk again...

Slowly I turn, my eyes grow wide
Before me, the Dark Monk stands astride
I cannot see his face or hear
His whispers fall silent on my ears

So far and fast away I ran
Ne'er wish Kinnity Keep to see again
But the Legend of the Black Monk lives on
Whenever Ye do hear this song...

Black Monk come down from the tower
Watcher of O'Carroll's stone cold bower
Those who see ye fill with fright
When tolls the bell at the hour midnight
