THE PASTURES OF MAYO

County Mayo
Pastures
Rolling onward
Pouring rain
Blowing across the open spaces
Grasses blowing in its wake

T'was hardest hit here
By the orchestrated famine
Although space to plant
Was plentiful
So many left die
So many cries
Rise up from the ruins
That dot the land

Leftover foundations of stone
Strong yet
Refusing with Irish will
To fall down

Dark clouds brewing
The earth's brow furrowed
Remembering those who lived here
And those long gone
Whose ghosts remain here to watch...
