I'm watching The Shipping News...not an Irish film, but an overlay of Irish names and music, places, accents...it is brilliantly sad, with a subtle humor.

To go home again...where you belong and you're from...a place maybe you've never been, but you feel like you belong. A little town on the edge of nowhere, ghosts outside the windows of a house so old, each creak like the ocean just outside the window.

No television, just records, the smell of freshly cut wood and a little kitchen table, boats in the water, horns and whistles on the wind.

My great-grandmother's family left Kilkenny when she was a girl. They went first to London and then Newfoundland and then Boston.

In this movie, Newfoundland is beautiful. But I think maybe I won't leave Ireland when I go...
