Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     John Huston Centenary Galway

rte reports Galway is to host a John Huston centenary conference

To mark 100 years since the birth of legendary American film director John Huston, the Galway-based Huston School of Film and Digital Media will host a two-day conference to celebrate his life and work later this month.

The recently set up film school named after John Huston
is based at NUI Galway, named in honour of the late director John Huston. The school will offer postgraduate training and education in both film and digital media, with special emphasis on the potential of new technologies for cinematic storytelling and documentary making.

John Huston, who directed such classics as 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre' and 'The African Queen , lived in Galway for many years from the 1950s onwards. His daughter, Anjelica, said the school would "ensure that Ireland continues to bring its many creative talents to a world audience".

John Huston had a long and distinguished career as a writer, director and actor, directing 41 films over 46 years, starting with film noir classic The Maltese Falcon in 1941.

His final film was The Dead (1987), adapted from James Joyce's short story. Huston received a total of 13 Oscar nominations, winning twice for his work as writer and director for The Treasure of Sierra Madre (1948) and has the distinction of being the only director to direct both his father and daughter to Oscar success: the first in '... Sierra Madre' and Angelica Huston in Prizzi's Honor (1985).

Craughwell in Co Galway was Huston's home for 18 years, from which he made significant contributions to the Irish film industry.

Parts of Moby Dick (1956), The Mackintosh Man (1973) and Casino Royale (1967) were shot in Ireland and he chaired the committee which produced the (ultimately doomed) Huston Report in 1968, marking an early attempt to start an Irish film board.

Keynote Speakers at the conference are: Patrick McGilligan ('Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light'); Joseph McBride ('Frank Capra: The Catastrophe of Success; Searching for John Ford') and Luke Gibbons of Notre Dame University.

As part of the centenary celebrations there will be public screenings of 'The Misfits', starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable and 'The Dead, starring Donal McCann and Angelica Huston

The Huston School of Film and Digital Media is based at National University of Ireland, Galway, and the conference will take place on Thursday 23 November and Friday 24 November.
