Irish Poetry Writers Forum Discussion:     NO WORDS

When no words can express the sorrow
And the ache that ye feel in yer heart
The emptiness of spirit
That tears yer soul apart

When no amount of eloquence
Conveys the deep distress
That threatens to destroy ye
And keeps ye from yer rest

Listen for an answer
'Tis what I sometimes do
When nothing else makes any sense
And the mystery yields no clue

When I cannot words to paper
For my burden is too great
And no amount of fallen tears
Can mourne my miserable fate

'Tis then I take to music
My tin whistle soft and low
She wails and cries a melody
My agony in tow

For anguish of the spirit
Language holds not the key
When my sadness ebbs and flows
In crashing waves so like the sea

My whistle seems to know the place
Its key unlocks the door
And smooths away with pretty notes
The agony at my core

My whistle plays most any tune
Cajoles a smile or tear
And like the pipes, its human voice
Soothes away each nagging fear

The sound cushions the injury
As jagged cuts pierce deep my soul
Then repairs the shredded pieces
And restores me to my whole

So bittersweet the longing'
When all else seems to fail
All who know me listen on the wind
For my winsome whistle's wail...
