Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     Wrong kidney removed. Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin

What is going on in our hospitals.

Child has wrong kidney removed
RTE.ie Monday, 21 April 2008
A young child has had the wrong kidney removed following a medical error at Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin.
The mistake that led to a healthy kidney being removed has been described by the hospital as an unprecedented error, and it says it has given its sincere apologies to the family.
The young child now faces regular dialysis unless a donor kidney can be found.
A full internal investigation is being carried out by the hospital.
Our Lady's has confirmed the incident and described it as a 'significant and regrettable medical error.'
An internal review is under way and the hospital says its board of directors will consider the detail of the review and act where appropriate.
The hospital also pointed out that the family was and continues to be given full support by the hospital staff.
The child has been discharged from the hospital. According to Our Lady's the family is happy to remain at the hospital for follow-up care.

A survey this year showed a high percentage of people ....are scared of going into hospital.
People fear they will not be treated properly ....and worse that they are at risk of contracting other illness.
We have people with serious illness on trolleys for days ...because there are no beds.
Most Irish people are now worried that going into hospital may be bad for their health, according to the results of irishhealth.com's latest viewers' poll.

The survey findings from Irishhealth
Ninety per cent of those who took part in the poll said that if they had to go into hospital, they would be concerned about contracting potentially deadly hospital-acquired infections such as MRSA or C.Difficile.
MRSA (methicillin-resistant staph aureus) is a common hospital-acquired infection, and patients with open wounds, invasive devices and weakened immunity are at particularly high risk of infection.
C. difficile is a bacterium that causes diarrhoea and other serious intestinal conditions. It is the most common cause of infectious diarrhoea in hospitalised patients in the industrialised world.

We asked our registered viewers if they had to attend a public hospital, whether they would be concerned about contracting a hospital-acquired infection such as MRSA or C.difficile.
A massive 90% said yes, they would, only 7% said no and 3% were unsure.
Recent official statistics have shown that just under 5% of hospital patients in Ireland have at least one infection resulting from being in hospital, and around 10% of these patients have MRSA.
It is estimated that at least 1,300 patients in Irish hospitals get the C.Difficile bug every year.

Concern over hospital infections was heightened again in recent days following an outbreak of influenza which killed two people in one ward of a Dublin psychiatric hospital.
According to the latest statistics from irishhealth.com's Rate My Hospital patient survey, seven per cent of patients who attended hospital recently in Ireland have contracted MRSA or another infection while in hospital.
