Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     BBC Who do you think you are - misleading family history

How typical of the BBC to promote simple stories as if they amount to 'the story'.

The fact of life and human history is that all of us, every single person alive today required 2 others to have made us and two more to have made each one of them and so on. Every one us alive has literally millions of ancestors, just going back a few hundred years, results in more than a hundred thousand plus ancestors.

Only the BBC and some naive and ignorant British and some equally naive Americans, who they purposely single out a branch of to fabricate the suggestion that most Americans are from England.

"Who do you think you are", in terms of telling anyone "who they are" is absolute nonsense, totally false.

To go off at one single branch as they do in"BBC Who do you think you are ", actually tells someone all but nothing of who they are, in fact it purposely misleads a individual away from the many hundreds of thousands of other unknown ancestors from different circumstances.
As if they don't count!
Perversely the BBC Who do you think you are actually suggests that the majority of ancestors anyone is descended from are irrelevant.

To single out one side is misleading and false and plain incredible, as in not credible.

None of us can ever know who we really as a result of the past. History even fairly recent history does not and can not record if our assumed distant ancestors were even genuinely connected.
Fostering, assumed adoptions of orphans and the simple connective mistakes of a genealogist, make such impossible for anyone anywhere, to truly ever know who they are based on their ancestors.

All humans are descended from millions of ancestors, that is the only fact and a common fact of all humanity.

But the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and Cindy Crawford, because of a extremely simplistic BBC Who do you think you are tv show- and misleading family history, now think they are directly descended from Charlemagne to King tut.
How naïve and ignorant, how insulting to the millions of other ancestors that they remains oblivious to and worse perversely encouraged to feel content in selective ignorance of, including their direct line ancestors who were clearly ignored for reason of boring or unable to directly track, even in assumptive fashion like the ones that were loosely presented information upon.

For heavens sake the BBC Who do you think you are started off with her paternal grandmother, then branching off ad hoc into other supposed maternal grandparents.
Including one line where she was not even connected to.

If anyone branches off a line, anyone can find historical figures of note, that is the way all humanity works.
But to suggest that is who anyone is because of a single branch, is misleading and rather sad and pathetic for a 21st century mind to even imagine, let alone accept.

As was pointed out here by Kate, "we are all connected to Brian Boru" and going further, even the junkies in the gutter and many a lowest form of criminal.

Millions are descended from Niall of the Nine Hostages, do we, should we, how can we credibly concentrate only on a tiniest minority of successful high profile descendants to suggest a family trait or genetic.

As stated before here, and excellently put - the "BBC Who do you think you are", amounts to idle entertainment at best, but taken seriously it is mindless and bloody idiotic British tv made for fools who want to imagine grandeur from grains of sand.

Love it and yes, that all makes common sense.
