Strabane - John Dunlap

Strabane in County Tyrone - One of the Six Sorrowful Counties was the birthplace of the man John Dunlap.

These are some of the facts of this Irishman's contributions to the U.S. in the 1770's.

The first daily newspaper in America was founded by John Dunlap. It was called the Pennsylvania Packet.

Mr. Dunlap printed the Declaration of Independence.

He donated €4,000 to supply Washington's army and later became a member of General Washington's bodyguard.

Mr. Dunlap served his apprenticeship at Gray's printing press which still exists in Strabane. (This is the same shop that President Woodrow Wilson's grandfather, James Wilson, was employed before he emigrated to America in 1807).
