Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     Irish Place Names Towns County Name Origins And Meanings

Do ye know the origin of your own Irish town, or county.

There are countless individual names of Places in Ireland that have ancient connections, most place names in Ireland spring from the townland or a field once of some note by inhabitants in the region. It is almost a science and the point and news of this post is to tell ye that now there are Government led projects and bodies now across the whole of Ireland recording all the place names of towns fields villages known and their meanings put onto databases.

I am helping locally with the Cork project, not because I know many names more than anyone else but I do have the trust of some of the older locals who will know some of the more obscure reasoning for the names of places be they old Irish, Norse (though most soon spoke Irish, some apparent Irish places still have a Norse cultural influence in the name at least) or old English or as sometimes maybe even a corruption a hybrid (Englirish) in origin.

If ye are in contact with your local areas
